2fort only TFC server

I know this may be a bit behind it's time, and dates my HL life a bit... but I've setup a TFC server for everyone to enjoy. All 2fort, all the time. You can check status here. It's here at home on my FiOS fiber connection, so the IP may change from time to time... so best to use oesm.dyndns.org to find it. From boredom breeds a questionable endevour, I suppose.

*UPDATE*
Quick udate - it's now 2fort / Dustbowl. Let the llama goodness rain from the heavens!

Everyone make sure to head to the forums to get your name in the pot for a free server! For reasons I can't understand, the response seems very limited. In the past it's been much better, just not recently.

Dec 05 Maintenance

I think anyone who reads theses knows the drill by now - December 3rd the servers will have some light housekeeping performed, there may be an hour or two of degraded performance while scripts are run and whatnot. The actual outage should be no more than 5 or 10 minutes while a few servers are rebooted.

*UPDATE*
I will be performing this maintenance on Thursday, December 1st instead of the weekend. This should make things a bit smoother for everyone, as traffic and useage should be quite a bit lower during the week.

I'll be performing maintenance on the servers this weekend, a bit ahead of schedule but this month the end/beginning of the month doesn't fall on a weekend. As usual it should only result in about 10 minutes of actual downtime, but possible a few hours of degraded service while various housekeeping tasks run.

Antispam on our hosted mail servers

A quick blurb to let everyone know that they can now set client side rules to filter out spam. I'm very cautious when it comes to tagging email as spam, and never delete on the server side. Instead we're lightly tagging with X-Header tags. We'll begin clamping down tighter and tighter as we get more comfortable, but will still never delete on the server. Rather, we let you filter by the X-Header info if you'd like.

If you'd like to filter, simply create a rule looking for "X-IMAIL-SPAM" and move to a new folder. Here's an example of an email I received that was tagged by both a DNS blacklist and by a known spam-originating URL:

X-IMAIL-SPAM-DNSBL: (spamhaus,7143794,127.0.0.2)
X-IMAIL-SPAM-URL-DBL: www.linkcounter.com

As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions (click on my name at the top of this post).

A few quick notes:

All HL servers have been patched to the latest release as of a few hours ago. Please let me know if anyone experiences any odd behavior.

I'll continue to honor the free webhosting to individuals and clans, however there's some current abuse of my goodwill occuring... and we all know it only takes one or two to ruin it for everyone. To keep things moving, I'll be placing two restrictions - disk space will be limited to 300mb, and monthly bandwidth will be limited to 2GB. I feel this is extremely fair and will allow me to continue with the free webhosting I currently provide. Please keep in mind that at most hosting companies, a package like this would run you upwards of $10/month. Not a lot, but considering how many free sites I host it could add up. Hate to be a party pooper, but I want to be able to keep things free to the gaming scene!

Last quick update - starting in September I believe I'll ramp up the monthly free server giveaway. Just head to the msg board and pick your game and mod for a shot at the randomly picked entry. Games include, but are not limited to:

    Half-Life and it's mods
    CoD
    MoH:AA
    Quake series
Again, we'll try out others as well. If I don't get much response, it'll probably go the way of the do-do...

Another quick heads up, Sunday will see our maintenance for July. As usual, there may be some slightly degraded service while we perform the work, actual downtime will only be a few minutes while physical hardware is bounced.

It's that time again. This month will see a slightly longer maintenance window, but actual downtime should be under an hour. We'll be putting in the permanent firewall and moving everything into a standard rack. If you'll remember (or read slightly below this) that I currently have the ugly firewall in place that my provider disliked... well they still dislike it. The permanent box is almost identical to what I run my game and web servers on, and they've proven to be absolutely reliable.

*UPDATE*
We're now finished with the maintenance and firewall replacement. It took a bit longer than we expected due to a bad ruleset backup on the firewall. Feel free to let me know if you experience any problems.

Today's outage

I'd like to apologize to everyone about today's unscheduled outage. A firewall bit the dust, and not in a low-key way, either. It was in a boot loop, I hit the reset button and it greeted me by exhaling large amounts of smoke out of it's front vents. So I've taken it down and replaced with the old firewall which I refer to as "old faithful". It's ugly, looks bad, but it simply works and works great. There shouldn't be any additional fallouts like today's.
