Hardware replacement this coming weekend

Wanted to give some advanced notice that on Saturday I'll be replacing hardware in one of the servers that's been causing instability. A hard disk has begun developing bad sectors, and I want to get it replaced before it gets worse. I'll most likely end up replacing the entire server, just to be safe.

Quick heads up that we'll be performing our regular maintenance this coming Saturday, December 2nd. Service might be degraded for an hour or two while this takes place, actual outages should only be 5-10 minutes while we reboot things.

Last night, 11/07/06, the datacenter experienced a massive power supply problem. Major PDU banks were taken offline by a yet unknown situation, causing a large amount of the datacenter to be without adequate power. An emergency electrician got the problem sorted, and the following hours were spent bringing everything back into a properly functioning status. I apologize for the disruption in service, and don't hesitate to contact me (just click the link at the heading of this post) if there's anything you need to discuss.

Firewall swap on 09/09/06 - Update

Well, it's done, but with an issue. The firewall swap went off with just a single hitch - none of the aliased live IPs were responding. I removed one, readded it and all of them came up. Bounced it a few times to make sure whatever made that fix it, kept fixing it... life was good.

The issue was the addition of the backup hardware. Rather than leaving things down any longer, I'll keep trudging forward with what's there and work on this here in the office. Once I have it fixed, I'll go for another attempt. I'll post an update when that time approaches.

Another heads up, and I hate to do this on a weekend following maintenance (resulting in two Saturdays in a row with an outage, even if very minor and brief) - I'll be replacing the temp firewall with the permanent firewall. I know, the temp was in place for over a year! But it's time to finally get the long-term box back in place so I can better utilize the over-kill that's in place for the firewall today. I'll get all rules, SNAT, etc updated on the new firewall prior to shoving it in the rack, so it should be as simple as powering down the old, pulling over cables, and powering up the new.

This hardware shuffle will allow me to greatly increase my backup possibilities, specifically I'll be lengthening retention. Right now it sits at 3 and 4 days (full on Tuesday and Friday mornings, with incrementals daily in between). After the changes, I'll be able to bump this up to 3 or 4 weeks in between fulls. What does this mean to our customers? Today, if you need something restored, depending on the day, we can only go back 3-4 days. After this change, we'll be able to go back 3-4 weeks!

I'll update here if anything changes.
